Knock-Off PB Planked Sign {tutorial}

 

While browsing around the Pottery Barn website I came upon this darling Planked Summer Sign -

 

 

But I wasn’t a fan of the $250 price tag – OUCH!

So I decided to make my own!

 

 

I love their “shop” theme but I decided that I wanted more of a family sign so I changed the wording up a little bit and the colors so it would match my home. I also made it a little bit smaller – 57” was a tad to big!

First: I went out to my scrap wood pile and dug up a bunch of pieces that I thought would work well.

 

 

Second: I decided on a basic measurement – I went with 24” – and then cut a couple pieces that size and a few a little bit bigger and a little bit smaller.

 

 

Third: I set up a pattern I liked and then flipped them over, used a sharpie and numbered them.
I used 9 pieces.

 

 

Fourth: I took each piece and sprayed a light coat of paint on them.  I sprayed 7 of them an espresso brown, one slate blue and one heirloom white.

 

 

Fifth: Using spray paint and toll paints I added a couple layers.

In the picture on the left, I used the piece of wood that I had sprayed heirloom white and sprayed an espresso boarder around it.

In the picture on the left, I sprayed heirloom white over the espresso (top board) and then used green toll paint and painted over the brown and white.

I sprayed and brushed on light layers so they looked worn.

 

 

Sixth: Using a combination of sand paper and my little hand sander – I sanded the boards down until I had the desired effect I wanted for each of them.

 

 

Seventh: Using my Silhouette I cut out the phrases that I wanted in vinyl, stuck them to my wood and painted them in. I brushed on a light layer and then I sanded them down once more a little bit so the wording would look worn as well.

 

 

 

Eighth: Now we assemble!! I busted out my Mother’s Day Gift and nailed the boards together. I cut two pieces of wood that were 25” long and ran them parallel along the back then nailed each piece in and then it was done!

 

 

In total I spent – $0! I had everything I needed hanging around my house – and besides the fact that I saved $250 – I also saved $25 in shipping and I got it a lot sooner!!

 

 

I am so pleased with how it turned it out and just love it!
